Uttara Kannada

Tagore Beach Karwar
The great poet Rabindranath Tagore was inspired to pen his first play in Karwar and he himself realized that that beauty of nature is not a mirage of imagination but reflects the joys of the infinite and thus draws us to lose ourselves in it.

Devbag Beach & Tilmati Beach
Devbag beach is a tourist place specially for beach lovers and adventures water sports. Tilmati beach the sand of this beach is black in colour hence it is called Tilmati

Sadashivgad
This place has a historical importance, because it has 600 yrs old Shantadurga Temple and Shivaji Fort .There is also a 17th century Darga.

Kurmgad Island

Kurumgad Island is a remote heaven, located 4 km into the Arabian Sea from Karwar. This tortoise-shaped island, 6 km from Baithakola in Karwar harbor, offers a beautiful view of the sea. Tourists can enjoy exotic beach walks, nature walks, swimming, fishing, bonfires and barbecues, dolphin spotting, boat rides and snorkeling. The best time to visit is from September to March.

There is a small Narasimha temple here, which has many legends associated with it. A fair is held every year on the full moon day during the Pushya (December - January) month. Thousands of devotees congregate at this island on this particular day to offer prayers.


Gokarna
It is famous centre for Sanskrit learning.Gokarna is very popular pilgrimage and known as Dakshina Kashi. Mythology says that the linga was given by Lord shiva to the demon king Ravana as reward for his devotion, Ravana stop at Gokarna to perform his prayers. Lord Ganapati had a trick on Ravana and kept the athmalinga  down on the ground against the instructions and could not lift it again.Ravana was unable to lift the linga up again,  Ravana  said to have force on the linga from the earth , it burst into pieces and was scattered in a nearby places, which now are venerated as temples Dhareshwar,Gunavanthe and Murdeshwar.

Om Beach
Om beach is because of the edge resembles the auspicious Om sign. This beach has a regular thronged by foreign tourists because of its privacy it offers.

Yana

It is really a nature’s wonder, it is set in the midst of lush of green forest .The two peaks called Bhairaveshwara shikara and Mohini shikara are also known Bhaireshwar temple, And cave inside the rock formation are added attractions.

Located amongst the evergreen forest of the Sahyadri Mountains, Yana Caves are 25 kms for Kumta, a small coastal town and 40-km for Sirsi, a commercial centre. One can experience wilder ness in all its holiness and loneliness in this limestone rock dome paradise. Yana is known for its unique rock formations and is a haven for rock climbers.

One has to walk several miles on the partially paved road from the highway. The area is known for its majestic mountains, a variety of rock formations, tricking waterfalls and the holy temple.



Murdeshwara
It is an memorable attraction the Shiva temple in marble surrounded by the sea at Murdeshwar. It has the tallest Shiva statue in the world with special reflecting eyes which make it come alive. This temple on the beach attracts  many tourists.

Dandeli
This place is now become a famous tourist place. This place is surrounded by thick jungle with River Kali dashing through furiously. One hundred and seventeen km from Karwar and just 75 km from the railhead Hubli, lies Dandeli, gateway to the 834 sq. km. Dandeli Game Sanctuary.  It is home to rare species of animals, like barking deer, sloth bear, civet cat, panther, Flying Squirrel and Malabar Squirrel.  Woodpeckers and Hornbills are some of the birds sighted.  Take in the jungle experience

Jog Falls
This falls is considered as a world famous water fall at Jog. The Jog falls is at the border of Uttara Kannada district and Shimoga districts. The four streams are called Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani. Other Activities available are water sports, rock climbing, Rapling, trekking. Accommodation available budget hotels and Resorts with cottages, tents. Food specialty Sea food and vegetarian in local style.Best time to visit Sept to April

Festivals  
The festivals have a very religious significance in the life of the people of Karwar. Some of the festivals which are celebrated in Karwar are the Dussehra Festival, Ganesh Chaturthi & karavali festival.

Ganesh Festival
Festival of Ganapati is celebrated in the month of September. Small mud idols of Lord Ganesh ( Elephant God ) were brought home and worshipped. Preparations for the festival would start many days before. The place where the Ganesh idols would be kept was decorated with buntings, paper flowers, colorful artificial fruits. On Ganesn-Chaturthi day the idols were brought with great enthusiasm and were worshipped singing Aratis ( prayers) for two days. Rice, Dal (varan) spread with spoonful of ghee ( melted butter) and little of lemon juice added to it was delightful. Special sweet of Patoli ( pancake made of rice flour stuffed with coconut and jaggery and folded in leaves of termeric ) added with ghee was a treat. Second day the sweet would be Modak ( tarts stuffed with jaggery and coconut mixture and deep fried) On second day in the evening the idols were immerged in the sea bidding farewell to Lord Ganesh with a promise to come back next year.

karavali Festival
In the month of Jan or Feb Karavali festival is celebrated . This is the biggest cultural event in Karwar, held on Rabindranath Tagore beach for four days. Recitals by famous artists lighten up this cultural extravaganza.This is one of the biggest fair to watch and enjoy. Film stars, singers and politicians visit during this time to celebrate and participate in the events.

Dussehara Festival

In the month of October Dassara would be celebrated in the joy of having a good crop of the season. The main entrance of the house was decorated with the cuttings of the newly cut paddy special sweet of Chibud-phov ( flattened rice mixed with coconut milk and jaggerry to which small cut pieces of Chibud ( a special water melon ) were added. Sweet smell of Chibud would bring flavour to the dish.

Twenty days after Dassara came the festival of Diwali ( the festival of lights) the preparation for which start ten days in advance. A number of sweets and savouries are prepared. While women were busy preparing eatables children made paper lanterns and buntings.

Diwali was celebrated for full four days. First day in the early morning all members of the family would have bath after having oil massage. Then all members would assemble together and would have faral ( eating goodies) that the women had prepared specially for Diwali. Ladoos (sweet balls) of different varieties, karanji ( pancakes stuffed and fried) chavade ( another sweet preparation) Chibud phov, Chakali(savoury) chivado (salty flattened rice fried and mixed with spices) and many other sweets were served. In the evening the house and its surroundings were lighted up with oil-lamps and children would burn crackers.

Next day in the evening Lakshmi-puja ( Goddess of wealth is worshipped) mostly business community worship their account books and pray for prosperity.

Third day was Bhaubij. The day is special for sister and her brother. Sister offers sweets mostly Shrikhand-puri ( sweetened and saffron-flavoured yogurt) to her brother and in exchange brother gives her some gift. This festival strengthens the bond between sister and brother.
